White House model predicts 200,000 coronavirus deaths in US

Amid the rising number of coronavirus cases in the United States, according to a White House model there could be 200,000 coronavirus-related deaths by October.

According to the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington, the death toll in the United States could touch 171,000 to 270,000 rising to 201,129, with the daily death toll expected to rise again in September.

On Thursday, the US recorded 840 deaths from COVID-19 in the past 24 hours with the death toll falling below 1,000. The total death toll due to the virus in the United States has reached 117,000 with over 2.1 million infected cases.

However, the country has seen a spike in COVID-19 cases in at least six states with Flordia, Texas, Nevada, Oregon and Oklahoma showing rising COVID-19 infections even as states reopen.

Florida governor Ron DeSantis said that spike in cases was due to increased testing with widespread testing of asymptomatic cases.

In Texas, there were 2,793 patients hospitalized with the virus. Arizona reported 1,827 new coronavirus cases taking the total number of cases to 40,924

Most states have urged the use of face masks for citizens and to follow social distancing norms as the number of cases continues to rise in the United States.
