Watch: Killer whales rescued, put back into sea in Argentina

A group of orcas (killer whales) were rescued and placed back into the water along the Argentine coast after the tide took them ashore at the weekend.

One rescue effort began on Friday and continued into the following day on Saturday.

"We saw that each time it was becoming more complicated, but we were very passionate about the objective of getting this done, of getting the orca back into the sea," Florencia Speciale, marine world animal department chief, said, adding,"it's a dream, a dream come true. This is incredible."

The mission was carried out by a group of workers representing the Argentine navy, the national Marine World Foundation, among other outfits including volunteers.

When the latter mission was completed, officials were told there was another beached whale along the same stretch of sand on Sunday. The same group of rescuers were called upon to deal with the task and also released the whale back into the sea successfully.

The whales made it onto the shores of popular beach towns including Mar de Ajo, Mar del Plata and Villa Gesell.

Orcas - or killer whales - are considered among the smartest of whales. They average in 19 feet in length, and weigh 3,628 kg, according to SeaWorld.
