Kate Middleton on Monday gave birth to a baby boy and soon came out to greet the fans and wellwishers who stood outside the London hospital in anticipation.

Kate came out with Prince Williams looking happy and healthy in her red dress while holding the newborn.

The boy, the couple's second son, now fifth in line to the throne, weighed 8 lbs 7oz (3.8 kg). William was present for the birth at St Mary's Hospital in west London where their other two children were also born.

Kensington Palace said the name of the new royal would be announced in due course. Bookmakers have made Albert, Arthur, Jack and Fred the favourite names for a boy.

The baby is the queen's sixth great-grandchild and is behind his grandfather and heir Prince Charles, father William, and siblings George, 4, and Charlotte in line to the throne.

The Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton was admitted to a hospital in London on Monday after going into an early stage of labour.

Both the Duchess and her husband William the Duke of Cambridge had not asked about the sex of the baby in routine checkups as they wanted it to be a surprise.

This is going to be a third child after Prince George and Princess Charlotte.
