Pompeo in his response to Wang sought to steer the conversation towards US dialogue with North Korea and denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula.

"I do want to share with you my visit with North Korean chairman Kim Jong Un yesterday, and the progress we've made, and to make sure we are working together on our joint mission we've talked about before: the denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula," Pompeo told Wang without making direct reference the escalating trade war with China.

"I regret that the strategic dialogue between our two countries was something that you all chose not to undertake. During the meeting, both men openly disagreed over which side had called off a bilateral security dialogue that was due to take place in Beijing this month.
