US constantly escalating trade friction: Chinese foreign minister Wang to Pompeo

US secretary of state Mike Pompeo began his visit with China meeting foreign minister Wang Yi who said the trade war has cast a shadow on China-US relations.

"US has been constantly escalating trade friction toward China, it has also adopted a series of actions on the Taiwan issue that harm China's rights," the Chinese foreign minister told the US secretary of state adding,"we believe this has been a direct attack on our mutual trust."

"We urge the United States to stop this kind of mistaken actions," Wang told Pompeo.

US has been involved in a trade war with China with President Trump levying tough tariffs against Chinese goods entering the American shores. Trump has said he would be forced to levy tariffs on all goods entering America in the future, if China did not adhere to US guidelines which involved reducing the trade deficit among others.

Pompeo in his response to Wang sought to steer the conversation towards US dialogue with North Korea and denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula.

"I do want to share with you my visit with North Korean chairman Kim Jong Un yesterday, and the progress we've made, and to make sure we are working together on our joint mission we've talked about before: the denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula," Pompeo told Wang without making direct reference the escalating trade war with China.

Pompeo that the US The US secretary he was ready to address all issues over which the US and China have fundamental disagreement, while asserting that the Trump administration has "great concerns about the actions that China has taken."

"I regret that the strategic dialogue between our two countries was something that you all chose not to undertake. It would have been an important opportunity for us to have discussions about this wider term, important issues, and certain opportunities for the people of our two countries," Pompeo told Wang.

During the meeting, both men openly disagreed over which side had called off a bilateral security dialogue that was due to take place in Beijing this month.
