UN former chief Kofi Annan to receive state burial in Ghana on September 13: Ghanaian president

Former chief of United Nations, Kofi Annan will receive state burial in Ghana on September 13, the President of Ghana announced on friday.

The announcement was made by President Nana Akufo-Addo following a meeting with Annan's family.

United Nations Secretary-General and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Kofi Annan died on Saturday at the age of 80 after a short illness.

Annan, of Ghanaian nationality, died in hospital in Bern, Switzerland.

He was the first black African to take up the role of the world's top diplomat, according to reports.

Annan served two terms as UN Secretary-General in New York from 1997-2006 and retired in Geneva and later lived in a Swiss village in the nearby countryside.

Mourning the loss of the leader, current chief of UN, Antonio Guterres called him a "guiding force for good".

'Kofi Annan was a guiding force for good. I join the world in mourning his loss. In these turbulent and trying times, his legacy as a global champion for peace will remain a true inspiration for us all,'' Guterres had tweeted following the demise of the leader.
