Two London police officers were attacked in an incident caught on video by a few people, sparking condemnation from the UK's Home Secretary and the city's mayor.

The video later went viral on the social media.

The recorded clip showed a male officer being pinned to the ground and kicked, before a female officer intervenes. The said squabble is played out between the two officers and a group of men.

To this end, Home Secretary Priti Patel wrote on Twitter that the attack was "sickening, shocking & disgraceful."

"We are not society's punchbags," the Metropolitan Police Federation's chairman Ken Marsh added in a statement. "On this occasion our colleagues are thankfully only reporting minor injuries -- but the reality is it could have been much worse."

The Metropolitan Police confirmed on Thursday that two men have been arrested.

The attacks have come following peaceful anti-racism protests across the UK throughout the weekend -- perpetuated by the death of George Floyd, a black man, at the hands of a white police officer who knelt on his neck for almost nine minutes. The anti-racism protests later spread far and wide.

The unrest saw tens of thousands take to the streets in London and other UK cities and some clashes between police and activists.

London's Mayor Sadiq Khan has supported the protests, but he condemned the small number of demonstrators who were involved in tense scenes with officers.
