Two people were killed and 16 were injured when a car exploded outside the governor's office in southern Turkey's Adana city on Thursday, CNN Turk reported.

Ambulances were dispatched to the spot while firefighters tried to put out the fire, Reuters reported.

"A vehicle blew up at 8.05am (0505 GMT) at a parking lot next to the entrance of the governor's office," Adana governor Mahmut Demirtas said.

The attack was believed to be carried out by a woman, Demirtas was quoted as saying by the Anadolu agency.

Turkish EU Affairs minister Omer Celik referred to the blast, on Twitter, as a "vile attack".

Kurdish, Islamist and leftist militants have all carried out bomb attacks in Turkey in recent years.

Celik tweeted: "Damned terror continues to target our people. We will fight with this terror to the end in the name of humanity."

He added that he had spoken to Governor Demirtas.
