The visit is being seen as an effort by Trump to pressure Congress to fund his border wall, one of the US president's central campaign promises.

Donald Trump will visit the US-Mexico border on Thursday, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Monday.

"President @realDonaldTrump will travel to the Southern border on Thursday to meet with those on the frontlines of the national security and humanitarian crisis, " Sanders tweeted.

"More details will be announced soon," she added.

The visit is being seen as an effort by Trump to pressure Congress to fund his border wall, one of the US president's central campaign promises.

Trump has pushed the US federal government into a partial shutdown — the shutdown is now in its third week — demanding that Congress fund the wall. The Democrats have rejected the idea outright, bringing about the shutdown.

Trump had earlier sent some 6,000 troops to defend the border against what is says is an "immigrant invasion".
