Trump speaks to Mexican president Obrador on migration, NAFTA & trade

Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, the newly elected president of Mexico spoke to US president Donald Trump on the phone for half an hour on migration and jobs as the two leaders appeared to hit it off well.

"I think the relationship is going to be a very good one. We had a great talk," Trump told reporters after speaking to Obrador.

Trump said he spoke about NAFTA and a possible separate trade deal with Mexico as the two countries sought to build bridges as the havoc of migration issue appeared to subside at least temporarily.

"I think he is going to try and help us with the border," the US president added.

Obrador won the presidential polls on a populist plank much like Trump and had even said during the campaign that he would "put Trump in his place". The newly-elected Leftist president also attacked NAFTA, much like Trump.

"I proposed exploring a universal deal (involving) development projects that would create jobs in Mexico and, by doing so, reduce migration and improve security," Obrador said, adding, "the tone was respectful and our teams will be holding talks."
