Trump says he will meet North Korean leader Kim Jong-un at demilitarised zone

US President Donald Trump on Sunday said that he would be meeting the North Korean leader Kim Jong-un at the demilitarised zone (DMZ) shortly.

Trump made the announcement after holding a bilateral meeting with South Korean President Moon Jae-in on Sunday.

Trump said he was looking forward to his meeting Sunday with North Korean leader.

"We're going to the DMZ border and I'll be meeting with Chairman Kim. I look forward to it very much," Trump told reporters in Seoul. "We've developed a very good relationship."

The meeting was first confirmed by South Korean President Moon and later by Trump himself.

Earlier on Saturday Trump proposed a meeting with North Korean leader in the DMZ that divides the Korean peninsula between north and south.

Trump suggested in a tweet that he could meet the North Korean leader while visiting neighbouring South Korea after he leaves the G20 meeting in Osaka, Japan.

“While there, if Chairman Kim of North Korea sees this, I would meet him at the Border/DMZ just to shake his hand and say Hello(?)!” the president said in a tweet.

However, North Korea said that they were yet to receive an official request from Trump regarding his meeting with Kim but described the US president's surprise invitation to meet Kim Jong-un "interesting". 

"We see it as a very interesting suggestion, but we have not received an official proposal in this regard," the official KCNA news agency quoted Vice Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui as saying.  

This is would be the third meeting between the two leaders in just over a year, and four months since their second summit, in Vietnam. The Vietnam summit collaposed with no progress on US efforts to press North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons.
