US President-elect Donald Trump has mocked North Korean leader Kim Jong Un over his latest missile threats, saying it won't ever materialise.

"North Korea just stated that it is in the final stages of developing a nuclear weapon capable of reaching parts of the US. It won`t happen!" Trump tweeted on Monday.

The President-elect also dragged China into the issue, saying Beijing is doing nothing to help with the rogue nation.

"China has been taking out massive amounts of money & wealth from the U.S. in totally one-sided trade, but won't help with North Korea. Nice!" Trump tweeted.

The President-elect's remarks came after the North Korean leader declared in a televised New Year's Day speech that his military is on the brink of testing its first intercontinental ballistic missile: A rocket that can be equipped with nuclear weapons and is powerful enough to reach any part of the US.

Kim's comments fuelled speculation that Pyongyang will test a long-range missile to coincide with his birthday on January 8, or around the time of Trump's inauguration, in an attempt to ratchet up the pressure ahead of any negotiations with Washington, reports the Guardian.
