Trump orders elimination of special treatment for Hong Kong to punish China

US President Donald Trump on Friday said that he has directed his administration to begin the process of eliminating policy exemptions that give Hong Kong different and special treatment, in response to a new security law pushed by Beijing.

''China has replaced its promise of one country, two systems with one country, one system. Therefore, I am directing my administration to begin the process of eliminating policy exemptions that give Hong Kong different and special treatment,'' Trump said.

Accusing China of conducting illicit espionage to steal America's industrial secrets, Trump announced the suspension of entry of certain foreign nationals from China, identified as potential security risks.

''For years government of China has conducted illicit espionage to steal our industrial secrets. Today I'll issue a proclamation to better secure our nation's vital university research and suspend entry of certain foreign nationals from China, identified as potential security risks,'' Trump said. 

Trump further said that the US would be revising the State Department's travel advisory for Hong Kong to reflect the increased danger of surveillance and punishment by the Chinese state security apparatus.
