The train was travelling between Seattle and Chicago.
Amtrak sent emergency personnel to the scene of the accident as several hospitals were put on standby.
The train had derailed in a remote town in Montana near the border with Canada. Amtrak announced it was cancelling some trains between North Dakota and Montana.
