The two citizens who were left injured in a knife attack at a station in Amsterdam were US citizens,  US ambassador said on Saturday.

Ambassador Pete Hoekstra said the pair were tourists visiting the city.

"We are aware that both victims were US citizens and have been in touch with them and their families," Hoekstra said in a statement.

Police shot and wounded a 19-year-old Afghan man, who stabbed the two people at the Dutch capital's busy station in the city centre on Friday.

According to Dutch police, the attacker was taken into custody shortly after the incident. Police said his motives were not yet known.
