Spain reports no new deaths due to coronavirus in past 24 hours; first time since March

Spain has reported no deaths due to coronavirus in the past 24 hours. This has happened for the first time since the beginning of March, as per senior health ministry spokesman's statement on Monday. The European country started reporting new deaths everyday since March 3.

Fernando Simon, head of the Coordination Centre for Health Alerts and Emergencies told reporters, "Today we have received no deaths with the date of death from yesterday." He also added that the number of new cases in the country has seen a steep decline.

Fernando Simon said that the country was fast in detecting cases, but he still warned that the pandemic has not ended. Any failure to respect the existing restrictions on mass gatherings, still in force despite a gradual relaxation of what was one of the world's strictest lockdowns.

The country worst-hit from novel coronavirus, the United States recorded 598 new deaths on Sunday, taking the overall toll to 104,356, according to Johns Hopkins University's tally.

The total number of COVID-19 cases in the country rose to 1,788,762, far more than any other country. as per the tally at 8:30 pm (0030 GMT Monday).
