'Severe consequences' to be faced if Iran resumes nuclear programme: Trump

US President Donald Trump has said that Iran will face some "serious consequences" if they restarted its nuclear program. 

On being asked what if Tehran restarted its nuclear efforts, Trump said, "I would advise Iran not to start their nuclear program I would advise them very strongly," "If they do, there will be very severe consequences," as quoted by Arab News.

After the US' withdrawal from the nuclear deal, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani had warned that his country could resume uranium enrichment "without limit" but would refrain from doing so for now.

In announcing the US pullout on Tuesday, Trump called the accord as an "embarrassment" that was "defective at its core".

Trump announced Tuesday he is quitting the Iran nuclear deal, pitting him against the United States' closest allies and leaving the future of Tehran's nuclear ambitions in question.

The 2015 agreement, which was negotiated by the Obama administration and included Germany, France and Britain, had lifted most US and international economic sanctions against Iran. In exchange, Iran agreed to restrictions on its nuclear program, making it impossible to produce a bomb and establishing rigorous inspections.

France’s foreign minister, Jean-Yves Le Drian, claimed that the deal, initially involving seven parties, could yet continue. But Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, who helped engineer the deal to ease his country’s economically crippling isolation, told French counterpart Emmanuel Macron in a phone call that Europe had only a “limited opportunity” to preserve the pact.
