Coronavirus infections across the United States have soared recently, amid the ongoing protests against racial discrimination and police brutality.

The six American states to report record-high cases are Arizona, Florida, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, and Nevada.

This comes in the aftermath of what many researchers claimed was the end of the country’s coronavirus peak. Many states have been forced to reopen in the middle of an economic crisis, with the country recording record unemployment rates after the lockdown.

Most of these states were previously recording such high rates of daily infections in May, when US was peaking in the first wave.

Oklahoma, one of the states with the highest surge is also where US President Donald Trump is planning to hold an indoor campaign rally this weekend.

The state witnessed an increase of almost eight per cent, which is the highest in the country. News agency Reuters reported that the state witnessed a 68 per cent spike in cases last week.

Trump has been vocal about reopening the economy even as the country broke all global infection numbers, and witnessed the highest number of deaths across the world.

The president is expected to hold the rally in Tulsa, marking his first in anticipation of the upcoming presidential elections.

Health officials in the state have advised people planning to attend the rally to get tested before they do, and to further test after the rally, after quarantining themselves for 15 days. Additionally, people over the age of 65 or with co-morbidities have been advised to stay at home. The health commissioner urged those over 65 or at higher risk of coronavirus-related complications to stay home.

American Vice President Mike Pence recently referred to the rise in infections as “overblown”. However, hospitalisations across the country continue to increase. Texas also inducted record-high numbers in terms of hospitalisations.

Meanwhile, the initial epicentre of the virus, China has witnessed a resurge in the number of cases in its capital city Beijing all tracing back to one local food market.
