Five masked men entered the Ritz hotel in central Paris and robbed jewellery worth over $5 million from the shops inside.

French police on patrol arrested three robbers while two others got away.

"The loss is very high and remains to be assessed," Police told Reuters.

The five-star hotel first opened in 1898 is owned by Egyptian billionaire Mohamed Al Fayed.

Several luxury brands display their jewels in the street-front windows of the Ritz.

French people are on the lookout for two robbers who fled from the scene.

French interior minister Gerard Collomb praised the police officers' "professionalism", saying they had "done our police force credit".

The high-profile hotel was home to France's Ministry of Justice earlier.
