A spokesperson of Instagram revealed: "We've been working on these updates for some time, though this is one — among others — that we've accelerated in light of COVID-19 to help support our community during a difficult time."

The family of a deceased user can fill up a form where they will have to provide necessary proof and documents. After memorialising the account, there will be no changes in the account but a 'Remembering' sign will appear above the profile picture of the user.

The feature cannot be used on public accounts and memorialised accounts don't appear in public spaces, like people's Explore section.
