Outgoing UN chief Ban Ki-moon hints at running for South Korea's presidency
Follow UsUN chief Ban Ki-moon has hinted he may run for president of South Korea when he returns home early next year, the BBC reports.
Speaking at a press conference on Friday, he said that after some rest he will return to South Korea and consider how best to help his country, the BBC said in its report.
“I will really consider seriously how best and what I should and I could do for my country,” he said.
This was his final press conference as secretary general of the UN.
South Korea’s current president Park Geun-hye was suspended last week after the parliament voted to impeach her.
She is accused of allowing a close friend to profit from her connections with the presidency.
“I can understand and share the anxiety of people about the future of their country,” he was quoted as saying by the Associated Press.
“And this is one of the biggest challenges the Korean people are encountering.”
Ban has served as the UN chief for 10 years.
