Oscars 2018: And the winner is... NASA technology
In a series of tweets posted from NASA's official Twitter account, the space technology institute revealed the unknown connection between the coveted Oscar trophy and NASA's space technology.
The Oscar trophy gets its unmatchable sheen, year after year, thanks to NASA's gold coating technology that has also helped in improving the US space agency.

"This weekend’s Academy Awards is probably the last place most people would look for NASA technology, but it’s there: the coveted Oscar trophy is coated in the same gold that helps telescopes glimpse distant galaxies," reads one of the tweets.
For over three decades Oscar trophies were cast in tin alloy and gold-plated, but the coating would wear off eventually.
While @TheAcademy honors the brightest stars in Hollywood, our satellites & telescopes glimpse the brightest stars in the galaxy. Both have something in common though. Our telescopes & the #Oscars trophies are both plated with the same gold! Learn more: https://t.co/cM4cNBG6Sr pic.twitter.com/r5lyGHUFPx

"Oscars have been awarded for nearly a century, but some winners found the gold coating wore off. In 2016, Epner Technology began gold-plating the statuettes, using a technique improved in part for the Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter. Epner guarantees the coating for life," as mentioned on NASA'S blog.
Epner guaranteed that the coating will not wear off ever and also offered a lifetime guarantee to replate, for free, in case of any wearing off.
