The Chinese president reasserted the Communist Party's supremacy over his country

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday told the nation's rubber-stamp parliament that "only socialism can save China" as he reasserted the Communist Party's supremacy over his country.

"History has already proven and will continue to prove that only socialism can save China," Xi said.

He later added that the Communist party was the supreme political leadership of the country and was guaranteed to "rejuvenate" China.

"The Communist Party is the supreme political leadership of the country and the fundamental guarantee to achieve the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation," he said.

Xi warns US

The Chinese President also warned against any efforts to split China, days after the United States approved rules that would allow top-level officials to travel to Taiwan.

"All acts and tricks to separate the country are doomed to fail and will be condemned by the people and punished by history," Xi said at the end of the country's annual parliamentary session.

He also tried to address concerns about Chinese development projects abroad, stating that they "will not pose a threat to any country."

"Only those who are accustomed to threatening others will see everyone as a threat."
