North Korea ready for 'inter-Korean ties and pursue reunification', says Kim during meeting with South Korean delegation

The South Korean delegation which had left for North Korea on Monday headed by Chung Eui-yong, head of the presidential national security met Kim Jong Un as the North Korean leader expressed the hope to ease military tensions on the Korean Peninsula.

"Hearing the intention of President Moon Jae In for a summit from the special envoy of the south side, he exchanged views and made a satisfactory agreement," North Korea's state-run official news agency KCNA said.

In the past one month both nations have come closer as a result of the Winter Games which recently concluded in Pyeongchang, South Korea as North Korea sent Kim's sister Kim Yo Jong in an attempt to broker peace between the two neighbours.

"It is Kim's firm will to vigorously advance inter-Korean ties and pursue reunification," KCNA said.

"He also made an exchange of in-depth views on the issues for easing the acute military tensions on the Korean Peninsula and activating the versatile dialogue, contact, cooperation and exchange," the report said.

Kim's discussions with the South Korean delegation lasted more than four hours, and included dinner at the North's ruling Workers Party headquarters in Pyongyang.

The Winter Olympics provided "a good atmosphere of reconciliation, unity and dialogue between the north and the south," KCNA quoted Kim Jong Un as saying.

The issue of denuclearisation of the North Korea, a contentious issue which the US has been harping upon for months wasn't touched upon during the meeting. North Korea has repeatedly said it won't give up its nuclear programme and would maintain a level of deterrence.

However, the South Koreans are cautiously optimistic Kim can be convinced to slowly part with his nuclear ambition as they pursue peace in the region.
