Nazi gate stolen from Dachau concentration camp found in Norway

An iron gate stolen from a former concentration camp at Dachau in 2014 has been found in Norway, Bavaria police officials said today. 

The gate, which bore a Nazi slogan “Arbeit Macht Frei”, meaning “Work sets you free”, was discovered after an “anonymous tip-off”, the police said. 

The gate was stolen two years ago in November in what authorities believe to be an organised crime. 

“Due to an anonymous tipoff, police in Norway’s Bergen have secured an iron gate with the well-known text,” Bavaria state police said on Friday. “From the picture transmitted, police believe it is highly likely that this is the iron gate that was stolen from Dachau.” 

The Dachau concentration camp was opened in 1933. Earlier used to incarcenate political prisoners, the camp went on to persecute 41,000 Jews during the World War II. The camp was liberated by the US troops in 1945. 

Another gate with the same bearings was stolen from the  Aushwitz concentration camp in December 2009.
