The announcement came as the capital Mexico City began easing lockdown restrictions from Monday.

With 269 new fatalities, the coronavirus death toll in Mexico jumped to 17,141, the health ministry said on Sunday.

The ministry also said that 4,147 new infections were reported on Sunday, taking the total number of coronavirus cases to 146,837.

The announcement came as the capital Mexico City began easing lockdown restrictions from Monday.

From Monday, curbs on vehicle traffic and public transport are eased in Mexico City and factories would start opening from Tuesday.

Late last week, foreign tourists started splashing in the oceans and enjoyed the sun in Mexican beaches, despite the country witnessing a record coronavirus surge in recent days.

However, public beaches remain closed across the country.

Mexico's tourism sector is seen as a prosperous industry, contributing 8.7 per cent to the GDP.

However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, only 86,000 people visited Mexico in April, down from 2.8 million that tripped to Mexico last year.
