Mainland China reports 5 new cases of coronavirus, adviser warns of a second wave

China recorded five new cases of the novel coronavirus on May 16, the figures have gone down after previous day numbers that were eight, as per the National Health Commission's (NHC) statement. 

Out of the five, two of them were imported cases whereas the three of them were locally spread. The new figures have brought the total cases in the country to 82,947 and the death toll at 4,634.

According to reports, the locally-transmitted disease is related to Jilin city called Fengman. This area is classified as a high-risk zone for coronavirus. 

According to the district's official post on WeChat, Heightened disease control measures in the district include only allowing only one person from a family to go out and purchase daily necessities each day.

The residents of the city are not allowed to leave and those who want to will have to provide a negative test result taken within the previous 48 hours.

The city of Jilin is the largest in the province and it borders North Korea and Russia. The city has also suspended its train services. 

The Chinese government's senior medical adviser, Zhong Nanshan has told CNN that the threat of the second wave is looming large. 

"The majority of... Chinese at the moment are still susceptible to COVID-19 infection because (of) a lack of immunity," Zhong said as quoted in the CNN report. "We are facing a big challenge, it's not better than the foreign countries I think at the moment."
