A magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck around 180 kilometres (112 miles) southwest of Rabaul in Papua New Guinea (PNG).

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) informed that the quake was measured at a depth of 60 km.

According to the report, the quake did not pose any tsunami risk.

PNG sits on the Pacific ring of fire where it is often hit by earthquakes.

Earlier in the February 7.5-magnitude quake struck the region in which 125 people were reported to be dead.

As the area is a mountainous area making it hard to reach isolated villages, reports of casualties take time to reach officials.
