UK PM Boris Johnson thanks party colleagues after winning trust vote

UK PM Boris Johnson has thanked Conservative MPs after winning the confidence vote in the British Parliament.

"I'm grateful to colleagues and the support they've given me," he said as per BBC.

"What we need to do now is come together as a government and a party."

Nicola Sturgeon dismisses trust vote win

Nicola Sturgeon, First Minister of Scotland and leader of Scottish National Party (SNP) has dismissed Boris Johnson's trust vote win as 'worst of all worlds' for the Conservative Party.

"That result is surely the worst of all worlds for the Tories... for Scotland, it just underlines the democratic deficit - only 2 of (Scotland's) 59 MPs have confidence in the PM," she tweeted.

Leader of the Opposition Labour Party Kier Starmer appeared to rubbish confidence vote result as he said the Conservative Party was 'propping up' Boris Johnson.

"The choice is clearer than ever before: Divided Tories propping up Boris Johnson with no plan to tackle the issues you are facing.Or a united Labour Party with a plan to fix the cost of living crisis and restore trust in politics. Labour will get Britain back on track," he tweeted.

Another Scottish Conservative MP Andrew Bowie said he voted against PM Boris Johnson during the no-confidence vote on Monday evening.

"Tonight, and with a heavy heart, I have taken the extremely tough decision to vote against the Prime Minister," Bowie said.

"I have not taken the decision lightly, at all, but after listening to my constituents," the Conservative MP added.

Laurence Robertson, MP for Tewkesbury who backed Boris Johnson for the Tory leadership in 2019, said: "It’s with a very heavy heart that I’ve voted against Boris Johnson’s continuing as leader of the Conservative Party."

Boris Johnson enjoys support from at least 145 lawmakers: Report

A total of 180 votes would be enough to ensure he survives the leadership challenge.

However, the ballot will be secret and there is no guarantee lawmakers will vote in line with their public statements.

Johnson, who scored a sweeping election victory in 2019, has been under increasing pressure after he and staff held alcohol-fuelled parties in his Downing Street office and residence when Britain was under strict lockdowns due to COVID-19.

According to newswire Reuters, at least 145 British lawmakers support PM Johnson. The British PM needs at least 180 votes to win the no-confidence motion set against him.

In the House of Commons, there are a total of 650 seats.

The Conservative Party has 359 members and the Scottish National Party has 45 MPs. The Conservative party forms the majority government with the current working majority at 75.

There are 7 Sinn Fein MPs and 2 MPs from the Alba Party. Alliance has 1 MP. There are 199 opposition Labour MPs in Parliament and 13 MPs from the Liberal Democrat with 7 Independents.

Plaid Cymru has 3 MPs, Social Democratic and Labour Party has 2 MPs with 1 from the Green Party. 

This takes into account the non-voting Speaker and their deputies and non-sitting Sinn Fein MPs.

According to another poll by YouGov, 59 percent of voters believe the Tories should defeat PM Johnson and not allow him to hang on to power.

Among Conservative members, 42 percent want MPs to fire Johnson, the poll revealed.

In case the the no-confidence vote is passed, there would be a leadership contest to decide Johnson's replacement which could take several weeks.

Scotland's Conservative leader Douglas Ross in a tweet said that he will "support the motion of no confidence".

Ross added that he had "listened closely to people in Moray" and to people across Scotland.

"I have heard loud and clear the anger at the breaking of Covid rules that we all did our best to follow, and even more so at the statements of Parliament from the prime minister on the topic," he added.

"I cannot in good faith support Boris Johnson," he asserted.

If Boris Johnson loses the vote of confidence, his successor would take over in Downing Street. On the other hand, in case he wins, under the current rules, he will be immune from a further challenge for a year. Notably, he will be safe until the next election, due in 2024.

After rebellion of 54 Tory MPs, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson to face confidence vote

Graham Brady, chair of the 1922 Committee of Conservative backbench MPs, said, "The threshold of 15% of the parliamentary party seeking a vote of confidence in the leader of the Conservative Party has been exceeded."

"In accordance with the rules, a ballot will be held between 1800 and 2000 (1700 and 1900 GMT) today," he added.
