National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) spokesperson Sutopo Purwo Nugroho tweeted that rescue operations were going on in the city of Sukabumi, where the landslide took place on Monday night.

At least nine people were killed and 34 went missing after a landslide buried more than 30 houses in the western part of the Java island in Indonesia, authorities said on Tuesday.

National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) spokesperson Sutopo Purwo Nugroho tweeted that rescue operations were going on in the city of Sukabumi, where the landslide took place on Monday night.

Amid conditions made difficult by rain and mud, emergency teams were looking for survivors in the hilly area buried by the landslide, which could be seen in a video published by Sutopo on Twitter.

In the last one year, the BNPB has recorded around 430 landslides, which have led to 129 people being killed or going missing, 115 injured, 37,933 displaced and 1,948 structures damaged.

Floods and landslides affect Indonesia every year during the rainy season, which lasts from December to February.

Indonesia also witnessed massive earthquakes and tsunamis in 2018, with the most serious ones striking the islands of Lombok, Sulawesi and the Sunda strait, with the total death toll crossing 3,200.
