Indonesia earthquake: Tourists continues to evacuate island as death toll hits 105

The death toll in Indonesia earthquake which struck popular tourist destination, Lombok Island increased to 105, France based news agency AFP reported.

Following the powerful quake, thousands of tourists and locals have been evacuated from the Lombok island.

According to reports, more than 20,000 people are believed to have been made homeless.

Thousands of buildings in Lombok have also been destroyed and about 230 people have been severely injured. 

Rescuers on Tuesday resumed the search for survivors and to recover the bodies of victims in the rubble of houses, mosques and schools destroyed in the disaster.

The efforts are being carried out by the rescue workers and Indonesia military personnels whose work was hampered due to the damaged roads and broken bridges making it difficult to reach some places. 

The authorities are also suffering from a lack of personnel issue due to which rescuers are having a hard time in reaching some locations.

As the tremor struck as evening prayers were being held across the Muslim-majority island on Sunday, a shattered mosque became a focal point of rescue efforts after a weeping man was pulled out of the wreckage.

The number of worshippers performing prayers at the time of earthquake is unclear, but AFP reported citing a witness that as many as 50 people may have been in the mosque.

The 7 magnitude quake came few days after Lombok was already hit by a 6.4 quake on July 29 that killed 17 people and briefly stranded several hundred trekkers on the slopes of a volcano.
