Indonesia earthquake: Death toll rises to 380; more than 300,000 homeless

The death toll of Indonesia's devastating earthquake in Lombok Island earlier this month has increased to 380 people, authorities announced on Saturday.

Following the powerful quake, thousands of tourists and locals have been evacuating Indonesia's popular tourist island. Reports say that out of thousands of people, many are still short of clean water, food and medicine.

According to reports, more than 300,000 people are believed to have been made homeless and over 13,000 people are injured.

A 7 magnitude quake jolted Indonesia's Lombok island on Sunday after it was already hit by a 6.4 quake on July 29 that killed 17 people and briefly stranded several hundred trekkers on the slopes of a volcano.

"It's predicted the death toll will continue to grow because there are still victims who are suspected of being buried by landslides and under rubble, and there are victims that have not been recorded and reported to posts," national disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho was quoted as saying by news agency AFP.

Two people were also killed in the neighbouring tourist destination Bali which was also one of the affected islands by the earthquake.

Six days after the quake hit some evacuees, reports say they have still not received assistance, particularly in the mountainous north of the island as most of the roads in Northside are damaged.

The efforts are being carried out by the rescue workers and Indonesia military personnel whose work was hampered due to the broken bridges and damaged roads making it difficult to reach some places. 

The authorities are also suffering from a lack of personnel issue.

Survivors of the quake have been shaken by hundreds of aftershocks, including a shallow 5.9-magnitude quake Thursday which caused people to flee evacuation shelters crying and screaming.
