India Club saved from demolition in London

The Westminister City Council on Tuesday saved the demolition of India Club In London by refusing the redevelopment of a site that accommodated the Club.

The move was initiated to safeguard the significant cultural importance associated with the site.

The club had been a popular venue of the meetings of V.Krishna Menon's India League. Some of the founders of the Club were Jawahar Lal Nehru and Edwina Mountbatten.

The refusal to the redevelopment avoided the potential loss of an important cultural venue located on its site.

The city council refused to grant the permission to redevelop the site after England's Historic Environment questioned the links of the club with India's Independence Movement.

A campaign was earlier initiated in the UK where thousands of people had signed an online petition to save the India Club in the Strand. The campaign was also supported by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor.
