China's foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said that "what laws, how, and when Hong Kong SAR (Special Administrative Region) should legislate are entirely within the scope of China's sovereignty."
The security law bans treason, subversion, and sedition amid renewed violence in Hong Kong as pro-democracy protesters clashed with security officials after China announced the tough new law during the legislature meeting on Friday.
Protesters clashed with police in a rerun of violence last year as the city witnessed large scale anti-government government demonstrations which often took a violent turn.
On Sunday, police arrested 180 people while firing tear gas and pepper spray to try and disperse the crowd. The demonstrations occurred despite authorities issuing coronavirus-linked law banning public gatherings of more than eight people.
Hong Kong's security minister John Lee said: "Terrorism is growing in the city and activities which harm national security, such as Hong Kong independence."
Amid the confusion over the new proposed law, Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi had earlier said that the new law must be imposed "without the slightest delay".
