Hidden behind the name-calling like "little rocket man" and claims of "my button is bigger than yours", Trump was historic in engaging directly with North Korea and it has to be acknowledged that North Korea has been a lesser nuisance since for all. If anything, it has opened a passageway for it to join the comity of nations, as and when that becomes feasible. Photograph:(Reuters)

“If I had not been elected president of the United States, we would right now, in my opinion, be in a major war with North Korea,” he declared.

President Donald Trump told Americans in his State of the Union address on Tuesday that he will hold a two-day summit with North Korea leader Kim Jong Un February 27-28 in Vietnam to continue his efforts to persuade Kim to give up his nuclear weapons.

The summit would be the second between the two leaders. Kim and Trump met in Singapore last year, marking the first bilateral meeting between leaders of the two countries.

“Much work remains to be done, but my relationship with Kim Jong-un is a good one. And Chairman Kim and I will meet again on February 27 and 28 in Vietnam," Trump said.

“If I had not been elected president of the United States, we would right now, in my opinion, be in a major war with North Korea,” he declared.

Since his first meeting with Kim, Trump said: “Our hostages have come home, nuclear testing has stopped, and there has not been a missile launch in more than 15 months," he added.

US Special Representative for North Korea Stephen Biegun will visit Pyongyang on Wednesday (February 6) and meet his North Korean counterpart Kim Hyok Chol to discuss the second meeting between the leaders of the two countries.
