Hundreds gather in Paris for 11th weekend of 'yellow vest' protests

Hundreds of "yellow vest" demonstrators gathered in Paris on Saturday for the 11th consecutive weekend of protests against President Emmanuel Macron's government.

During one of four planned marches around the French capital on Saturday, protesters assembled on the iconic Champs Elysees avenue before marching towards the Place de la Bastille square.

The movement began in mid-November 2018 over higher fuel taxes, which were subsequently scrapped, and have since morphed into a broader demonstration against the government.

In December 2018, "yellow vest" rioters burned cars and damaged shops and businesses in Paris, but since early January, clashes against protesters and police have started to decline.

Saturday morning's protests took place before a planned evening of demonstrations dubbed the "yellow night."
