Hong Kong security law undermines one country, two systems framework, say US, UK

Britain, the United States, Canada and Australia in a joint statement said China's decision to impose the new national security law on Hong Kong lies in direct conflict with its international obligations under the principles of the legally binding, UN-registered Sino-British Joint Declaration.

"The proposed law would undermine the One Country, Two Systems framework," the joint statement said.

China's parliament today approved the imposition of security law on Hong Kong even as the United States announced that it was revoking the special status conferred on Hong Kong.

"No reasonable person can assert today that Hong Kong maintains a high degree of autonomy from China, given facts on the ground," Pompeo said.

The security law punishes secession, subversion and terrorism which has been fiercely criticised by Hong Kong residents leading to large scale protests.

China's Li Zhanshu, chairman of the NPC Standing Committee said: "The move was "in line with the fundamental interests of all Chinese people, including Hong Kong compatriots."

The move was backed by Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam.
