Leibniz holds a significant spot in the field of mathematics

Google on Sunday dedicated its doodle to commemorate the 372nd birthday of German philosopher Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz.

Leibniz holds a significant spot in the field of mathematics and is credited for the development of differential and integral calculus independently of Isaac Newton.

Leibniz was the first to describe a pinwheel calculator in 1685. He invented the Leibniz Wheel, the first mass-produced mechanical calculator.

He also refined the binary number system, the foundation of virtually all digital computers.

Leibniz's contribution to the field of philosophy is notable. He has been identified as one of the three great 17th-century advocates of rationalism along with Rene Descartes and Baruch Spinoza.

His work anticipated modern logic and analytic philosophy and contributed to the field of physics and technology, probability theory, biology, medicine, geology, psychology, linguistics, among others.

Leibniz's valuable work spans across a vast array of subjects, catalogued in journals, letters, and in unpublished manuscripts.

He last breathed at the age of 70 in the year 1716, Hanover in Germany.
