Golden Globes 2018 Updates: Dressed in black, Hollywood stars have a message

Golden Globes 2018 has officially kicked off with actress Nicole Kidman winning the lead actress in a limited series or a motion picture made for television for her role in hit TV series "Big Little Lies". 

While the coveted awards ceremony started off on a positive note with stars coming out dressed in their best, what stole the show was their unanimous stand against sexual misdemeanour and misconduct on part of the powerful few.

The stars, both women and men (not so surprisingly) could be seen dressed in all black for the occasion -- as a symbol of the highly-talked Time's Up campaign that started off against this prevalent culture of misuse of power in one of the biggest entertainment industries of the world.

Their attire as put out by most celebrities is a symbolic statement of solidarity with victims of sexual assault and misconduct exposed last year.

Answering 'why black' on the red carpet actress Kerry Washington was quoted: "I'm proud to be wearing black tonight. I'm proud to be wearing black to stand in solidarity with women who have been doing the work for social justice for decades. I'm proud to be wearing black to stand in solidarity with all of the great people who have come forward to talk about injustice". 

Emma Watson who was seen with fellow actress Marai Larasi said, "For me, it's about unity. It's about solidarity and what can be born of women speaking to each other, empowering ourselves" while one of the most vocal voices of the campaign and veteran actress Meryl Streep was seen walking the red carpet with activist Ai-jen Poo. Streep said "We're showing solidarity across a lot of different lines" before adding " we're standing up together."

It all started in 2017 when notable Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein was accused of sexual harassment, assault and misconduct by more than 100 women collectively from Hollywood. The list included some of the most famous names and A-listers of the industry including Gwyneth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie, Cara Delevingne, Salma Hayek, Uma Thurman and many others. 

The Golden Globes is being hosted by Seth Meyers of NBC's Late Night show.
