Gold coins marking the Taiwan presidential inauguration have hit record high prices.
This comes as the central bank unveiled two new commemorative coins to mark the inauguration of President Tsai Ing-wen and vice president-elect William Lai.
A total of 10,000 gold coins and 50,000 silver coins will be sold by the bank of Taiwan on the inauguration day.
More than 3,000 pre-orders have already been placed for the commemorative gold coin--which is priced at a record $1,873.
The silver coins, on the other hand, are priced at a little more than $53 each.
Besides the pre-orders--the rest of the coins will be available for sale at some bank of Taiwan branches.
The central bank began issuing these coins in 1996 which was the first time Taiwan had a direct presidential election.
The gold coin released in 2016 to mark Tsai's election was priced at around $1600.
This year's inauguration ceremony will also be streamed online amid the pandemic.
Instead of multiple public events--this year's ceremony will be a simple and solemn one according to the presidential office.
