Egyptian national Eman Ahmed Abd El Aty, who was once the "world's heaviest woman", passed away in the early hours of Monday due to medical complications including heart disease and kidney dysfunction.

She had turned 37 a few weeks ago.

Ahmed was in India earlier in 2017 where she underwent a weight-loss surgery to lose 323 kgs at Mumbai’s Saifee Hospital. When she landed in India, her initial weight was more than 500 kgs.

She was admitted at Burjeel hospital in Abu Dhabi since May 4, under the supervision of more than 20 specialist doctors.

Her family expressed their gratefulness to the hospital for the treatment provided and to the authorities and residents for their support and care.

"Our prayers and heartfelt condolences go out to her family," said the hospital.
