Critically acclaimed actor Leonardo DiCaprio is set to star in Quentin Tarantino's movie on Charles Manson murders but is not expected to play the American cult leader.

Dicaprio will instead feature in the film playing the character of an ageing, out-of-work actor in the yet-to-be-titled movie.

The plot of the film has not been revealed but the director-producer of the film said in November that it "will not a be a biographical movie on the cult leader rather a story set in summer of 1969 when a string of gruesome killings took place" in Southern California carried out by Manson's followers.

Charles Manson was one of the most notorious criminals of his time. He died in November 2017 at the age of 83 while serving a life sentence for ordering the murders of nine people including actress Sharon Tate, wife of Roman Polanski.

The yet-to-be-titled film is slated for a release on August 9, 2019, when the murders complete an exact 50 years

It is also speculated that Australian actress Margot Robbie has been asked to play the actress Sharon Tate.

This will be the first movie from the director without his good friend and former chief executive of Weinstein Company that was involved in every movie of Tarantino's. Harvey Weinstein was fired from his post after allegations of sexual abuse and harassment surfaced last year against him. Close to 100 women accused the media mogul of abusing his power and using it for sexual favours.
