US officials feel Kim might be trying to "to drive a wedge" between the US and South Korea.

As North Korean leader Kim Jong Un warmed up to South Korea proposing to send his national team for the Winter Olympics in Seoul, President Trump said today it was possible because he was firm and strong in dealing with Kim.

South Korea on Tuesday announced it was open for dialogue at a border village raising hopes of peace in the Korean peninsula.

President Trump in an early morning tweet said with all of the "failed “experts weighing in, talks and dialogue between North and South Korea wouldn't have been possible if he wasn't firm and willing to commit total "might" against North Korea.

"Fools, but talks are a good thing!," the president tweeted.

The US military meanwhile which has been conducting joint drills with Japan and South Korea for the past several months moved with cautioned over the olive branch handed by Kim.

Chief of United States Forces Korea (USFK), Vincent Brooks told the Yonhap news agency: "We must keep our expectations at the appropriate level."

"We can't ignore that reality," he said, adding it was important for the United States and South Korea to maintain an "ironclad and razor sharp" alliance.

Brooks said the peace overture could be a strategy by North Korea to divide the United States, South Korea, China, Japan and Russia to reach its goal of being accepted as a "nuclear capable" nation.
