The National Health Commission said on Monday that out of 49 new cases, 39 are reported in the capital Beijing and three cases found in neighbouring Hebei province.

The fresh rise in the number of cases in Beijing is linked to a cluster in a wholesale food market, where officials have begun mass testing.

Officials say that they seek to test 46,000 residents at the Xinfadi food market in Bejing and over 10,000 people have been tested already.

As many as eleven residential neighbourhoods near the food market have been kept under lockdown following the surge in infections.

Many Chinese cities are warning their citizens to avoid travelling to Beijing.

Also, as Chinese people from other countries are returning back, there is a rise in imported cases and 10 such cases were reported on Monday.

As many as 177 active coronavirus cases are there in China, most since early May.
