Chinese national kidnapped in US, held for $2 million ransom
The FBI in the United States is on a lookout for a Chinese national who was kidnapped by three men after a business meeting in Los Angeles about five weeks ago, demanding a US $2 million ransom.
The investigators said that the man, identified as Ruochen “Tony” Liao, a 28-year-old Chinese national who co-owned a Costa Mesa luxury-car dealership, was kidnapped by three men from San Gabriel Square on July 16.
He was abducted by three men riding in two black vehicles, Laura Eimiller, spokeswoman for the FBI office in Los Angeles, told AFP. FBI agents provided images from security cameras that captured footage of both vehicles.
She said Liao's abduction may be linked to a business deal gone sour, as he often worked with "people not often reputable."
"A working theory is that there was some sort of business dispute," Eimiller said, as quoted by AFP.
After they kidnapped him, the abductors contacted Liao's family and demanded that they pay a US $2 million ransom, but the money was not paid, reports said.
On Monday, a sketch of one of the suspects was released. The investigators are conducting a thorough search, including a theory that Liao may have been reportedly involved in a business dispute.
His family is offering a US $150,000 reward for information leading to his safe return while the FBI is offering US $25,000 for information leading to his recovery.
