'Chaotic' Brexit would threaten European unity for a generation: UK

British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt on Tuesday will address the crowd and talk about the threat of a no Brexit deal between London and European Union. 

If no conclusion is reached between the EU and Britain, it could threaten the continents unity for a generation, as per his office. 

"One of the biggest threats to European unity would be a chaotic no-deal Brexit," Hunt was to say in a speech at the US Institute of Peace in Washington, advance excerpts of the address provided by the Foreign Office reveal, as quoted by AFP. 

Hunt, met his counterparts in France and Austria to warn that the UK was on course for an “accidental no deal” if the EU did not rethink its rejection of the white paper, thrashed out at great political cost at Chequers.

The Brexit secretary, Dominic Raab, was in Paris on Thursday to see Nathalie Loiseau, the French minister for European affairs.

Hunt, who replaced Boris Johnson in July amid discord over how London should handle Brexit, was to say Britain would manage - "we have faced many greater challenges in our history" - but the European Union would suffer a serious blow.

"The risk of a messy divorce... would be a fissure in relations between European allies that would take a generation to heal - a geostrategic error for Europe at an extremely vulnerable time in our history," Hunt was to say, AFP quoted. 

On Friday, May is cutting short the first leg of her holiday to meet France’s president, Emmanuel Macron, at Fort de Brégançon, his state residence on the Côte d’Azur.

Absent a deal, Brexit means Britain will become a “third country,” with its insurers, banks and fund managers on a par with their peers from the US, or Japan, or indeed Kazakhstan.
