California on Tuesday voted to legalise the recreational use of marijuana in the state, officials said.

The approval of Proposition 64 has made California the most populous state in the US to legalise the recreational use of marijuana.

California now joins states like Alaska, Colorado, Oregon, Washington state and Washington, DC in legalising the recreational use of marijuana.

Proposition 64 allows Californians who are 21 and older to possess, transport, buy and use up to an ounce of cannabis for recreational purposes and allows individuals to grow as many as six marijuana plants.

Proposition 64 will also allow the retail sales of marijuana, while imposing a 15% tax on sales.
