Follow UsMost Brazilians think the Olympics did more harm than good to their country but at the same time they're proud of their image abroad, according to a poll today.
The poll by Ibope, published in Estadao newspaper, showed mixed feelings in Brazil after hosting South America's first Summer Games.
Sixty-two per cent said the Games were more negative than positive for the country, while 57 per cent said the Games boosted Brazil's image internationally.
On how the actual event has gone, 42 per cent said good or excellent, 30 per cent said average, and 24 per cent said poorly.
The poll was conducted between 11-15 August, in the middle of the Olympics, which close today.
Marcia Cavallari, head of Ibope Inteligencia, said the "ambiguous" findings are partly explained by the fact that Brazil hosted the party in the middle of its worst recession for decades.
"They don't clearly see the benefits that the country can expect from having events of this magnitude," she said in Folha.
"A majority support (the Games) but there are doubts on the use of public money for events of this nature when there are other priorities, especially considering the economic crisis."
