In a one-of-kind-incident, a remote Brazilian island with a ban on childbirth celebrated the birth of the first baby in over a decade.

Brazil's Fernando de Noronha island is situated around 370 km from the city of Natal. Home to about 3,000 residents, the island has no maternity wards and expectant mothers travel to the mainland in order to deliver.

The scenic island has strict population controls in place because of the reserve's vulnerability.

The 22-year-old woman, who delivered the child on Friday night, told reporters that she was unaware of her pregnancy. According to reports, the woman gave birth to a baby girl when she went to use the bathroom.

The inhabitants of the island were overjoyed on the birth of the first baby in nearly 12 years. Residents are helping the family with some donating clothes to the baby girl.
