US airplane giant Boeing has resumed production of its beleaguered 737 MAX aircraft at its Renton factory in Washington, after a hiatus of five months.

In a statement on Wednesday, Boeing also confirmed that the 737 programme will gradually ramp up production this year.

Boeing halted its 737 MAX production in January after the aircraft was grounded worldwide. More than 800 737 MAX jets have since been globally grounded -- after investigators found flawed flight control software on the aircraft was partially responsible for two crashes in Indonesia and Ethiopia.

The two crashes had together killed 346 people.

The 737 programme began building airplanes at a low rate as it implemented more than a dozen initiatives focussed on enhancing workplace safety and product quality, the statement said.

During the temporary suspension of production that began in January, mechanics and engineers collaborated to refine and standardise work packages in each position of the factory. New processes will ensure that employees have everything they need to build the airplane, the company added.
