A total of 16 people were reported injured as of 17:30 on Sunday after a 5.7 magnitude earthquake hit Xingwen County, Yibin City, in southwest China's Sichuan Province.

The 5.7 magnitude quake occurred at 12:46 on Sunday (Beijing Time).

The Ministry of Emergency Management initiated an emergency response after the earthquake.

People in towns near the epicentre felt the quake strongly. Some houses suffered minor damage while a small number of houses collapsed. Some households in the area suffered power and gas outages. Roads in several areas were also affected by landslides.

Local firefighters rushed to the epicentre to carry out search and rescue efforts, and more rescue workers are on the way.

The local government is carrying out comprehensive relief efforts including inspecting buildings and providing medical treatment. Emergency tents are being set up and relief goods have been sent to the quake site.
